Why Networking Events Are Exhausting

In my job, I have to attend at least 3 networking events a month. Preferably 4. For me, as a results oriented gal, I am signing up all over the place. The same can be said for other stats that I can measure. I’m both analytical and weird that way, but I LOVE measures.

Yet, these networking events are really a lot of work. You have to show up, which can be a challenge if we are having a bad outfit-day. And then there is making sure you have your business cards (which I don’t yet – new job!) And finally, you have to “work the room” and exert yourself.

Here are three “low-fi” tips to coming out of the event with at least one contact. (I am not against connecting via LinkedIn or Twitter, btw. But I am sort of picky about who I connect with)!

1. Assess the speaker bio and content in advance. I usually attend speaking engagements so there is a theme or topic, and more reason to be there than circulating a room. It also helps create easy dialogue with strangers.

2. Try to really engage with the speaker by asking a question, and then speaking with your neighbors sitting next to you.

3. Move around if it’s not a sitting room only and strike up at least one conversation with a few folks around the room. Possibly exchange business cards (or as in my case, take theirs and tell them you’ll contact them).

Sometimes even one networking relationship can be enough to merit attending events. Even if they are $20, $40 or $80 per event. If cost is an issue, there are free events. If you have the luxury, be choosey!
