The NATO Analogy #NATOanalogy #identitycrisis #culturecrisis

This phrase about how NATO must be feeling the day after the election clicked for me, as an example to explain to some folks why we all feel powerless.  In an interview between NPR host David Greene and NPR correspondent Frank Langfitt in Brussels, Langfitt said this about how NATO felt when the most powerful member nation in the world would be run by Trump:

I mean, imagine waking up and finding out the most powerful member of your group is about to be run by one of your harshest critics, who actually questions your value.

At that moment, I knew exactly how they felt. You could do a Madlib and replace group with nation, and NATO with any of these: women, LGBTQ, minorities and immigrants.

When someone uses words to attack your identity, it creates fear. Especially if that someone is in a position of power over you. When your boss criticizes you, it can shake you to the core during your review, or if you are being reprimanded, or if you are being told why you didn’t get a raise or promotion.

Words can really really sting and shake humans to the core.

I think that many men either consciously or subconsciously felt the same threat from Hillary. She was attacking the male establishment, identity and value in society.

And so, the culture crisis continues. When can we finally accept that it’s not either, or? There needs to be some sort of small stride toward the middle as a starting point.

We need to be able to integrate our cultural identity.
