I was walking with a friend recently and we were talking about the power behind desire. In a sense, she told me, desire creates a feeling of immortality. It hides the truth of a certain death.
I hadn’t actually thought about it before. I’ve been grappling with why people don’t see that death is the only certain thing we have in life, even if the timing is uncertain. Still, we don’t always know what profession or salary or family situation will come upon us by design or fluke, but we can predict that we someday die.
Your mission, if you choose to accept it: Don’t let desire make you invincible. (Or… Don’t let desire suppress your humanity). You can only briefly hide from the truth of a certain death.
