When I was living in Paris as a young 19 or 20 year old, I went to Les Misérables at the Opera House. It was one of the highlights of my Parisian experience. And now I get to watch it in the theatre. At first I was skeptical about a musical movie – no talking, but now that I’ve heard or read about a dozen different interviews and reviews, I’m really excited to see it. Seems sort of paradoxical to be excited to watch a movie filled with despair. Especially knowing the tragic ending to Fantine’s life as a devoted mom, abandoned by the unwed father of her child and left to become a prostitute to support little Cosette. The thought is already making me tear up. I better bring a lot of kleenex. Doesn’t sound too far off from current world news on NPR.
