How to Start A Business

I’m not going to tell you that it’s up to you to decide the best way to start your business, because there is nothing more frustrating than not even knowing where to begin, let alone what’s “best for you” based on your personality.

Me, I choose lawyers to help. And accountants. I choose handlers when I can, and then I handle the rest.

For instance, I will file my quarterly taxes myself. I will not, however, file my annual taxes.

I “could” go to my Secretary of State (url convention is www.sos.state.tx.us OR sos.state.wa.us OR sos.state.ca.us, etc.) to register, but I prefer hiring a professional whom I know, and who can help me to make informed decisions. However, there is great information on the web site if you want to learn more before deciding whether to hire someone to help you.

When hiring a laywer, I’m told it could cost low thousands (up to 3K) to get set up. For a non profit with co-founders that I’m involved in, it will cost $5 – 10K.

The more complex your business, aka with partners, the more you need help. Hire a lawyer and do it right. If you want referrals, we will start to put our list together. I’m sure many of our community can continue to add to the list!
