#RPCL Log Date September 24, 2017 #BeingHuman #AskForHelpStrategically #BlindedByBeliefs

We have created such a culture of self-reliance and self preservation for the next generation, that we can’t possibly rely on others. That’s what we’re taught and passing on to the future.

So of course I’m super frustrated when I hear stories like the recent local problem of the homelessness on KUOW, and how one young man didn’t want to ask for help. He wanted to carry the torch of character building and self reliance, which were values he was taught. What he isn’t realizing is that doors may open for him to exit his situation, but he can’t see beyond his beliefs to actually walk through those doors, and he could do it to further his values and not compromise them.

And I watch it happen to this younger privileged generation within the workforce more often than not. It’s as if they can’t see, really see, what lies ahead, clouded by their defiant beliefs, or fear of failure.

How do we teach this generation what it truly means to ask for help?

Your mission, if you choose to accept to: Don’t be blinded by singular beliefs. Hold on to them, but try to see that there are more pathways to fully live them.

Be kind. Be safe. Be appropriate. Now go!
