Tent City Fears

If you are a latte activist and obsessively listening to or reading the news, drinking your coffee and complaining… then you might relate to my latest discovery that I was a little apprehensive when the tent city moved in within less than a mile of my house.

My concern wasn’t based on any specific data points that tell me a tent-city brings more crime to the neighborhood. In fact, I was doing my own logical calculation for what most likely happens when you keep people OFF the street – and I’m deducing that it’s actually, probably, preventing more crime from happening.

I believe the tent-city encampment is going on week three, and I haven’t heard or seen any protesting or signs of activism to “wish them away”. And let’s face it, we can’t wish something away that is a part of our reality – homelessness in America. Hopefully (back to my latte activism) we are all cognizant of the fact that we live in a first world with second and third world conditions.

After driving by this morning, I was disappointed that the same line up of folks I had seen yesterday getting supplies (food? coffee?) wasn’t there today. The idea that humanity is right behind the big fabric barrier actually gave me a good feeling of being supportive when I saw the activity. These people didn’t wish for these conditions, either. And at least they have a drier place to just be who they need to be, with what and who they’ve become. Hopefully they can strive for and get help to be safer in their lives, by living somewhere other than the street. We all need a sponsor in our lives.
