With polarizing debates about how to reach rural America, I wonder where to begin. What’s one baby step toward unifying sides?
Reading and following different perspectives in social media, one thing stands out – words matter. Name calling matters. Qualifying phrases that create a common enemy are dividing us more.
We need to start with language.
One positive word can hopefully shift the mindset away from “enemy” or “victim” and toward reunifying our nation, and recognizing shared values as Americans.
Your mission, if you choose to accept it: Think of and express a positive word to define your opponent on current issues and events. Close your eyes and picture someone you really respect despite your differences. Try to be as authentic as possible with your positive descriptor.
Example: I know Joe has his heart in the right place. He is a kind and thoughtful liberal leaning guy – but a friend nonetheless. Gary is super smart, thinks with all pistons firing and can be a really generous friend and citizen. He is more conservative than my other friends and good to the bone.
Post your response on FB, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
Be kind. Be safe. Be appropriate. Now go!
