Women supporting women in the workplace needs to begin with understanding exactly how.
First of all, when women of privilege, those who have standing in a company, still have a nagging head voice reinforcing self-doubt, they naturally won’t turn to another woman with self doubt and choose her to be on their team. They look for confidence. They want people brimming with self-assurance. And confirmation bias will tell you its subconsciously men. Mostly white men with all the right boxes checked.
So when corporate America and company leadership asks “where’s the diversity, creativity, divergence”? The answer is, there isn’t any. Not intentionally… but nonetheless it’s the culture created and codified by mostly white men.
And women who succeed codify themselves with learned behavior from these men and, even though they want women, they surround themselves with the same maleness of those who legitimize their existence in the workplace. They tell themselves that, if they are chosen because of their skills and not gender, then why should they choose gender first?
And I would say back…hmmmmmm because chances are, some of those insecure women could probably run circles around the over confident men. That’s why.
We are generations away from equality.
