When I was in Singapore, I felt this perfectly civil and safe culture of rigid rules that was somehow oppressive. Creative expression was not present nor felt.
And it had me thinking… At some point we have to set expectations, create boundaries and help others understand the rules of the game. And then, we can allow people to blossom without trying to manage how they choose to create every single step and how they make decisions along the way. Real learning comes from failure and consequences for actions – but just as important is to have a rewarding culture of trial, not a punishing culture. To err is human. To forgive, divine. Being human is messy. And yet Singapore felt inhuman somehow.
