International Women’s Day

Today I am reflecting on my life and the lives of my daughters – what our lives are like today and what they will be like tomorrow.  Today, March 8 is the 106th International Women’s Day, a day celebrating women’s achievements around the world.  There are some reasons to celebrate.  And yet, women and girls, no matter where they live, still don’t live in a world of equality.

What will my girls’ lives be like when they are full grown women?  How will they compare to the lives of my friends’ boys?  Will my daughters be allowed to sit at whichever table they choose for as long as they like?  Or at dinner time, will they be forced to clear the table and wash the dishes while half of the party-goers discuss politics and enjoy after-dinner single malts?

For the sake of our daughters, and our sons, let’s continue to work towards equality in all the ways we can.  Call that bear in the woods “she”.  Dress newborn girls in blue.  Buy building blocks and cars for your little girls.  Encourage her to climb trees.  Reward her for getting A’s in math and science.  Teach her how to manage money.  Encourage her to study engineering.  Push her to ask for a higher salary and better benefits when she gets offered that first job.  Inspire her to ask for raises and promotions.  Reward her husband for looking after their children when she goes on that business trip.

Women’s rights are human rights.  Respecting them will benefit us all.  Do it for our daughters and sons!
