Emotional Balance at Work

In order to have work / life balance, there is one rule. Balance has to exist either at work or at home. And let’s face it, if you are a time-starved mom or dad, achieving balance at home is next to impossible!

That’s why I believe it’s important to find emotional balance at work. What I mean by emotional balance is keeping engaged while at work but leaving work when you go home. I know it’s next to impossible to avoid working some nights, but if you are like me, it’s better not to “plan” on it. Otherwise, you give yourself another reason to go get that latte and procrastinate a deadline.

If you are feeling over committed and over-invested at work, it probably feels like you are tipping the scale between work and home every day. It’s enough to cause you to go gray.

I’ve talked about finding a sanctuary at work where you can push the reset button. Here are some other tips:

1. Yoga before or after work, or during lunch hour.

2. Power walk during lunch – or even a saunter.

3. Find an empty conference room and close the door. Bring a mindless game or book to disconnect from work.

4. Leave early if you are having a bad day.  And be sure to burn off some energy if you are having trouble coming down from your anger.

5. Go get a massage!

Please feel free to add your favorite ways to keep emotional balance at work!
