The Dreaded Performance Review

Have you had your performance review yet this year? At my place of employment, it’s that time of year. And, in normal times when folks are hopeful, there is something appealing about that opportunity to check off the boxes and say “here’s what I’ve done, exceeding all expectations”. But in our situation, we haven’t had reviews in two+ years, and there is a palpable feeling of DREAD in the air.

Here’s what I am recommending to employees:  As a team of close peers, we are getting together to throw all names in a hat, and each person draws a name. Once all names are drawn, each employee would sit down and write three things they really appreciate about the person whose name was drawn. After five minutes when everyone has had a time to finish writing, each of us reads aloud what we wrote and tells the team, from the heart, what those three (or more) things are.

Yes it’s a “feel good” team boost, but it’s really really necessary in these dark times.  Here’s a funny review I found (dated 2009) in Business Week to remind us, you are not alone.
