Today Phil was telling me (at our favorite coffee stop) that business has been improving over the past several months. He has a large network of coffee shop owners, and they are saying the same.
Is there a better way to talk politics and economics than with a cup of java and your favorite barista? We both laughed (and shook our heads) about the mixed messages of “real estate up, stock market up, sequester bad, job market down”.
I am not putting down major media channels, but it’s exhausting trying to keep up and remain positive. I can’t believe how informed I’ve become by having time to follow the news. I’m a “Latte Activist”. Drinking my latte whilst listening to NPR, reading online news and my favorite quick snapshot – “The Week” magazine. I wonder how many people out there are like me before and after having no time. We are all either busy parents, busy professionals, busy socialites – and with little to no time for politics. I admit, I have had the luxury of an extremely informed father who emails me articles all the time, and a large community of latte activists who send me links from their computers.
At some point, we have to narrow down our focus. Are we Latte internet activists, signing petitions by clicking a button? Or do we write checks and support local candidates? Are we only reading business newsletters and the occasional link on Twitter redirecting to Huffington Post or do we still support the local paper and print magazines? Or maybe we only have time to listen to talk radio to/from work…
My friend and executive coach told me it took his former colleague 10 years to step up his activism. He now drops off a teddy bear once a week at the NRA head office to represent the life of a lost child from the Newtown tragedy.
Although I am in my own little inertia bubble (or face down in my cup of java), Covert Leadership is a form of activism. We are moving steadily and will soon share our mission with you.
