Let’s face it. From the time we are very young and into our 20’s, we are aspiring to be “all grown up”. We watch what others do, listen to what they say, observe how they behave. We learn from our environment including peers, mentors, parents.
We look for our voice in the world.
Who we are. What do we stand for. What we are willing to risk. When we are willing to settle down. Where will our ambition take us. When do we say “no”. And so on.
I was talking to a friend about the recent dream-crisis she’s been faced with. She was laid off and, although she was absolutely miserable where she worked and focused on finding her dream, she is now looking change right in the face, ready or not.
We, of course, see her as an amazing and talented force of nature. So we are hiring her for one (and hopefully several) projects. When talking about her new opportunity, she said to me “I’m now giving my skills a new voice. My voice”.
This is a beautiful way to define what we do for a living. Your role in work and in life intersect and can reflect your voice equally. No matter the many faces we wear or the many roles we take on.
My career voice is compassionate working mom.
What’s your career-voice?
