Two Audiences to Think About – for Networking a Job Search

Recently I volunteered advice to a family member – which probably means it sounded all preachy and fell on deaf ears!

However, I feel compelled to share it because it really comes so naturally to me, but when I said it out loud, it sounded BRILLIANT.

Okay, so it’s a subjective point of view. Now you can be the judge!

My advice went something like this:

In your initial efforts to network with your existing community of friends, past co-workers and acquaintances, be sure to group your audiences into two buckets.

In the first bucket: List all of the people whom you know you can talk more openly with. Maybe you don’t have a bulls eye just yet, and you want to bounce ideas around with them.

In the second bucket: Have your elevator pitch ready. And make sure it’s tailored to the expertise of that person (or of their networks). Be ready to zero in on why you want to do what you say you want to do and talk up your talents.

Oh, and a bonus piece of advice — if you tend to be humble, this is not the time to show any wavering confidence or self-doubt. Be sure you know that pitch inside and out and stay on message.
