I’ve often thought about rebranding the term feminism. Not because there is anything wrong with it. But because it’s become a bad word. Like “Socialism”. And that’s in part due to a select group of outspoken anti-activists or what I like to call “anti-vists” (with the mainstream media as a vehicle) to make that happen.
So what do we do when words become unmentionables? Well, on today’s day to celebrate women around the globe, I say we embrace everything feminism stands for and we either own the term heart-fully, or we make up a word like womanism. Either way, women deserve this day, because of all the efforts they (and we) have put into our communities, our families, our life’s work. We are both more empowered today, and less empowered as much as ever (female mutilation, human trafficking, rape in Pakistan, India, Cologne or on U.S. college campuses (to name a few), U.S. wage inequity, anti-abortion rights, and the list goes on…)
It’s an interesting time to be alive. All we can hope for is to continue to fight for our social justices and create a more humane place for generations to come.
So I say thank you, to all of the #womenoftheworld.
