As a parent, I have to remind myself that my children want to succeed, especially when I’m scolding them for making a mistake. There’s a fine balance between encouraging failure, taking risk and scaring them enough to avoid mistakes that are too risky.
As a community, supporting success en masse is a similar construct. Yet it’s one that we have moved away from at home and at work. Why?
Suddenly it’s more important to be right than to be supportive, fair or respectful of others. Humanity has created a power struggle between those who see one definition of right and wrong, and those who see many many shades of right, wrong or difficult to ascertain based on bias.
It’s hard to communicate more than absolutes to children, but to adults?
Your mission, if you choose to accept it: Be Adult About It. Be the supportive adult. Support others in their success and find ways to get help for your basic needs, too. #BeAdultAboutIt
Be kind. Be safe. Be appropriate. Now go!
