I haven’t done a peaceful march before. I was hesitant at first. I didn’t know what to expect. I was even a little afraid that it could get out of hand. Do I bring my kids? I was clear about one thing. I was going.
With a desire to stand for love not hate, for human rights not greed, my family joined me, knowing I was unwavering in my desire to be a part of history and herstory. I felt emboldened by the fact that my husband, girls and siblings were by my side.
With close friends, we broke bread that morning and headed out to march in solidarity and in peace. The underlying message? We have a powerful voice. We do not subscribe to one branded message but to millions of individual messages that tether us together. United we stand. And that crosses every aisle. I realize that some perceive this march as a protest, as a one-sided story.
Just know I couldn’t be prouder to be among every representation of what it means to be American today. United we stand. Reunited, we will stand stronger.
Your mission, if you choose to accept it: Write down what it means to march within a democracy, and how you felt before, during and after the march. Where were you? Did you join a march in a specific home town or fly somewhere? Did you avoid it? Have you ever joined a march in the past? What would you hope for as the outcome of any march?
Be kind. Be safe. Be appropriate. Now go!
