I love the idea of infusing creativity into every aspect of our business and personal lives. I used to believe that we were creating robots out of engineers by not exposing science majors to enough arts. By teaching to a rigorous curriculum and over-engineering our world, we are less likely to deviate from the norm.
Some rules are meant to be followed, others are meant to be broken – assuming we are not talking about harming anyone or anything. And there are new rules just waiting to be discovered.
Clayton Christensen wrote a book that created a new vocabulary for innovators: The Innovators Dilemma, about disruptive innovation. We are not only disrupting things that need to be “broken”, but we are breaking systems (like our media and news-distribution) that have yet to be redefined. Fake news is now a thing, and frankly, with President Elect Trump’s way of communicating via Twitter, chaotic messaging is the new leadership style for the highest ranking leader in the Free World.
Like it or not, Trump’s style is working for him. And it’s extremely creative, even though some would posit it’s potentially dangerous.
So how can we use creativity, resourcefulness and out-of-the-box thinking, for a common good?
Your mission, if you choose to accept it: put your creative cap on and via Twitter, FB or Instagram, pledge an action for positive change. Do you care most about education and want to form a group to discuss how to teach critical thinking in schools? Is it the environment and maybe you want to create T-shirts to wear at work or in school or sell as a fundraiser to donate to a local organization? Is it the LGBTQ cause? Something else? Share it. Be vulnerable. Take the risk that it will speak to one other person and have a positive effect. Use the hashtag #covertleadershipforcreativity #reunificationproject #RPCL #Covertleadership
