What’s your fast exit plan? I was talking to some folks ranging in age somewhere between 35 and 50, and learning why they’ve either left or plan to leave their corporate jobs. For the younger end of the range, they decided that corporate America had such a false sense of urgency and clients were making demands over non-life threatening issues which seemed absurd. So she quit. She is now a trainer, and enjoys helping women get in touch with their physical (through exercise) and emotional (through therapy) health.

She craves the emotional connection which was not happening in her job in advertising.

For the older end of the range, he has stuck it out and is looking to retire soon. Thanks to spectacular planning, he has been saving enough to support his family before he turns 60. He has made great impact in his role as a leader, yet he may be leaving too soon given the climate and unpredictability of his job.

What is wrong with this picture? Why are the good ones taking the fast exit route, when we need them to stay and positively impact humanity in the workplace?

Your mission, if you choose to accept it: If you can, create your fast exit plan as an alternative if you cannot take it any longer. But… If you can, find a way to stay the course, and care “too much” again. We are teaching people to be heads down and teaching the care out of them – for self preservation and productivity.

Be kind. Be safe. Be appropriate. Now go!
