Can you have job security and be happy?

I have often wondered how many of my past peers have loved their job security and boss more than the meaningful role for which they’ve signed up. This can create a culture of distrust and a culture of individualism where folks care about saving their own hide over being a part of a compromising situation. Some companies seem to be less about the supportive community or a collective whole and more about a big personality.

The more self-serving an employee or boss is, the harder it is for the rest of us (subordinates or peers) to achieve happiness or “success” in the workplace.

No wonder the stats were high (84%) for those looking to leave their jobs at the beginning of 2012. The reason was unclear but the company was cited as finding “restlessness and lack of options due to the poor economy” to be a catalyst.

As I am back in the fray of interviewing, I can cite one more reason. The job descriptions I’ve been receiving  are so very large – encompassing 1-1/2 or 2-person jobs in one role due to the economy. And I read that salaries will continue to be hard to increase due to the low demand of jobs – unlike the 80’s when a person could dictate their salary. I’m exhausted just reading the roles and responsibilities of some of these jobs.

How can this be sustainable?
