The New Normal

Change is one of the hardest things to manage once we find our rhythm at home and work. We are habit and structure-forming creatures.

To me, the very first thing to consider is a shift in perspective. It’s not only about change, it’s about creating the “new” normal.

So what does it take to create a “new” type of normal?

Sweeping change usually comes in stages. I’ve used the metaphor of a 12-step program to reform a bad habit, where the first step is to acknowledge we have a problem.  A colleague of mine uses the metaphor “stages of grief” where we need to embrace our emotions as milestones along the path of recovery from pain, in order to move through the emotions.

Perhaps the easiest step for any size of change is to imagine and manifest what a new normal might look like. It can be a long term big dream or one small habit. Once we realize that normal can completely be elastic —  time or situation-dependent — we can start to embrace change.

But that’s not all. We need constant systems of accountability. Otherwise, the old normal slips back into our field of vision.
