Writing Thank You Notes

Today I finally got to those hand-written thank you notes I had mentioned in an earlier blog. First I sent an email to my contact and set up a follow up call. But that’s not enough.

One of the most important things you can do is send handwritten notes. Do you have problems saying thank you after an interview? How many ways can we thank someone – especially when there are three or four people to write to?

Here are some samples of what I have written.

Dear HR Director,

Thank you for making time to meet with me and for introducing me to the leadership team! It was so great to see the office, learn more about the culture and better understand the position and responsibilities.I’m thrilled that you’ve considered me for the role and I look forward to next steps. I’ll follow up with you via email to discuss any follow up thoughts, feedback and questions. Thank you. Sincerely, Agent M

Dear Visionary,

Although I borrowed a quote from my yoga instructor’s email footer, I’m a big fan of Gandhi’s quote “Be the Change you wish to see in the world”! As someone who strives to be at their best, it is aspirational but an important goal for me. I hope to be able to take my best practices and combine it with your vision for how to create a balanced leadership style at Company Z in this new xyz leadership role. Thank you for making time and for considering me for the position. Sincerely, Agent M

Dear Director,

It was a pleasure meeting you and hearing from someone who has been with the company since inception! What an incredible culture and I especially appreciated the way you described how we can organically create and develop this role. I hope we meet again soon, and thank you for the opportunity to see the office and meet you and the leadership team (you can say the names if you want). Sincerely, Agent M

What about you? Do you have words of wisdom about how you approach sending thank-you notes? Please share!
