When your boss asks you, “So, what are you working on?” or “What are you doing over there?” – implying that he or she sits close by, how does it make you feel?
This is something that is such a sore subject for me. It’s right up there on the ingredient list of my Recipe for Poor Leadership (earlier blog). I need to add it and post again.
Why is this such a painful question?
First of all, it suggests that the manager is micromanaging AND doesn’t trust me.
Secondly, it begs the question – if you were actually managing and giving us measurable goals and realistic deadlines, instead of vague strokes of suggested tactics, you wouldn’t have to wonder how we spend our day, week or month.
Finally, it really is a communication breakdown. This is one of the most insulting questions for any employee to receive. Especially as frequently as we receive it. I found myself giving a rundown of what I’m doing (and trying to be as positive as possible despite my irritation).
