When we look at what motivates employees at work, it’s especially evident with the younger generations that it’s freedom. They want to determine when they show up, when they leave or when to work from home. They want to go on vacation – guilt-free and without needing permission.
It helps that their heroes are folks like Mark Zuckerberg – or the 20-something CEO’s who truly can create their daily destiny.
I have always been money-motivated. For me, influence was a bi-product. I didn’t mind being the do-er. And then it clicked. I wanted to be on my own so I can do all of those things, too.
This next generation is dialed into a better balanced life. One that it took me 20-years to achieve. And they expect it, demand it, now.
So how do we compensate in units of influence instead of dollars? Interesting way to think about how to motivate our future performers!
