Missing the Right Moment

As I see it, it takes (at least) three things to seize an opportunity in the right moment. In a split second, the moment can be lost. And although it didn’t seem like a big deal, it could have been the catalyst for your next career or life move.

3 Things For Seizing the Moment:

1. Courage. It’s a funny thing to say. But I have seen more people paralyzed by fear. And that fear prevents them from becoming un-stuck.

2. Curiosity. Really – ask questions. Don’t read or hear something and immediately assume it’s not an opportunity for you. In fact, ask yourself, why not? And then ask questions to learn more about it. Ask for help if you can’t make the decision unilaterally and need some guidance. Most importantly, don’t assume.

3. Compassion. I hadn’t intended this to be the three C’s of seizing an opportunity, but this was evident to me from a recent situation. If you can’t see beyond your own concerns, if you can’t feel beyond your own fears, and if you can’t ask yourself – how can I give back, and how can I mentor someone or help? Then the door will slam shut.

If the door cracks just a little, it can take a lot of moxie to pull it open. Make your own check list of why not’s and see if you can convince yourself to open it wide.
