Customize Your Life

Are you slogging through some parts of your life?  Work?  Relationships?  Have you ever noticed how quickly time passes when you are doing something in which you are truly passionate and engaged?

So many of us are doing what we “should” be doing.  Maybe we selected our profession because we were good at a particular subject at school.  Or we stay with a partner based on family pressure.  Or we live in the house or neighbourhood or country in which people expects us to live rather than the place we love or yearn to explore.

I’ve noticed a common theme coming out of research on diverse topics such as management, leadership, education, and even parenting:

To truly succeed, you need passion!

The top indicator for success in so many things is passion.  Other factors are effort, focus, and persistence through adversity – all of which are directly proportional to the amount of passion you have.

Just because I’m good at something doesn’t mean that is what I “should” do with my life.  As Sir Ken Robinson said, human flourishing is organic.   Success is not linear.  It is not a mechanical process.

While we can’t guarantee success, we can create conditions under which we will flourish.  In other words, to succeed, we need to set ourselves up to succeed by doing things we are passionate about, spending time with people we actually like, and being in places that feed our spirit.

We need to take the time to honestly and truly make a choice about that job or person or home… to chose whatever feeds our spirit, not just to do what we “should” do.

How have you customized your life to feed your spirit and ensure success?
