#RPCL Log Date January 12, 2017: #BeingHuman #ListenUp

I called a friend today to catch up. It’s been a while, and it was clear from the moment we got through the initial hello that she just needed a friend to listen, without judgment or solutions. I found myself trying hard to focus and, of course, was able to start really focusing when I stared at a wall in my room instead of an LED screen.

We are set up for so much distraction and dopamine hits from social media and text messages that we need to go to rehab and learn to be human again.

Rehab Step 1: First admit you have a problem with distraction.

And so your mission today, if you choose to accept it: Sit with someone this week and really listen to them. Give them one-hundred percent of your time and attention, by putting all devices away, and ensuring you have mentally solved that nagging equation before you make the time. In our busy culture, we need to be mindful and intentional by unloading our worries first, before offering to listen to someone else. It’s not just devices, it’s the stress of our every day.

Be kind. Be safe. Be appropriate. Now go!
