So… hi.
This is my first blog post. I’m agent M7.
The other day, a student pointed out to me that when she raises a counterargument in class, she often is judged and dismissed by some of the others for offering a different view. She feels ostracized at times.
Debate dates back centuries and has been an important part of our formal culture and civil society. As an educator and facilitator of complex thinking and critical ideas, I am convinced debate is a necessary medium for processing out loud and pushing one’s thinking further.
Naturally I was dismayed to hear this student’s experience with debate.
Your mission, if you choose to accept it: Enlarge your mind; embrace debate. I encourage you to engage with your community, especially those you most fundamentally disagree with. You may just end up agreeing to disagree, or maybe you will find something valuable in what they have to say.
