Age. It’s a trip. And with age comes a sense of entitlement and fear. Our society allows us to feel entitled when we become mature adults compared to our teenage selves. Yet there comes an age when it’s no longer okay to get older (especially for women aesthetically), and fear sets in – that horrible mid-life crisis hits hard for men and women alike.
Within the U.S. I’ve observed we do not treat elders with as much respect as I’ve seen in some European countries and in much of Asia. In fact, Americans are marginalized in our workforce by the time they turn 60 depending on the industry, and considered old-curmogeons in the workplace UNLESS they are within the C-Suite or in politics.
Riffing off of something Brene Brown said, I like the analogy of a midlife as an unraveling, and a death of what was.
I’d like to think of our passage through time as a rebirth every morning – or a chance for renewal at the start of every day..
Think of it as a life/death/life cycle. (Good book if you haven’t read Women who run with the Wolves by Estes). We are born. We bid our younger selves farewell with time (and maybe mourn the loss of a certain period in time, knowing we can never have it back) and then turn away from what was in order to look forward into our future selves, celebrating renewal or rebirth of a more evolved human being.
Your mission to achieve Superhumanness: Treat your passage through time as an opportunity for renewal. Allow yourself to mourn your younger self as you age, and then look forward to the upgraded and wiser you.
What’s not to love about who you’ve become with so much more knowledge when you age?
Be kind along your journey and remember, you got this!
