When is it OK to be an Impostor?

Agent M1’s post about using someone else’s voice (or wanting to) got me wondering… are there times when it IS productive to try to emulate someone else?

There are times when I do…

In the course of my career/working life/whatever, I’ve been lucky enough to have worked for 2 managers that I really respect, NS and BD. When I’m faced with a challenge, I sometimes guess how they might handle it. Whether I guess right or not, just the act of thinking about it has a positive effect — it keeps me from reacting too quickly to the situation.

I also think back to NS and BD when I’m managing teams. What did they do that made me respect them and how did they motivate me? I remember being excited when I heard NS’s footsteps coming toward my desk — like some sort of great surprise was about to happen. How on earth did she achieve that?!

Some of the things NS and BD had in common:

  • Listening
  • Fairness
  • Confidence
  • Clarity
  • A healthy distance
What qualities did/do the managers you respect the most have?
