Adapting to Work Environments

Did you ever watch Gorillas in the Mist? It’s based on the story of Dian Fossey and how she learned to behave like mountain gorillas (in the Congo and in Rwanda), in order to be accepted enough to live with them and study them.

Although Fossey was renamed in How I Met Your Mother, Marshall refers to her persona when he explains to his wife that he needs to become one of the pack (referred to as jerks cut from the same cloth) in order to be accepted at a law firm where he is interning. As he picks up bad behaviors from his cohorts, he rationalizes that it’s an anthropological experiment – in homage to Dr Aurelia Birnholz-Vasquez.

Not only was it hilarious, it’s kind of true. We are all just primates mirroring behaviors in order to be accepted and to survive our workplace.

Where was this episode when I needed it most?
