Remember that catchy title – Truth and Lies in Advertising? Well, it felt appropriate tonight when I was thinking about a comment my executive coach made last week.
Agent M, he said, it’s hard to fathom, but politics rank as the first or second most important part of doing a good job.
Ugh. So that’s why I suck at this corporate stuff. Seriously. He reminded me that being high-functioning is not going to be the deal-maker. In fact, I can say with absolute confidence it can be a deal-breaker.
And yet, I think the reason I am so anti-politics is based on two facts. One, company leaders, who are just like country leaders, will lie if they have to. Seriously. Christian or not (referring to the presidential race. Okay, also referring a former boss or two). And two, I have a hard time “feeling” the game. It’s not authentic to who I am. So I can’t justify behaving in a way that feels foreign or inauthentic.
So, here’s my rhetorical question back. When is lying okay?
