The Joy of Office Ex-Patriotism

I once spent eighteen months away from my home country. That’s not enough time to become a real ex-patriot, but long enough to gain some perspective on my own culture — to see its flaws and appreciate its good side.

The same concept holds true for being out of a workplace for a while — it’s easier to “see” and evaluate workplace culture after you’ve been out of it for a while.

I used to work at Company X, and some of my friends are currently employed there. When they share their crazy stories with me now, I listen with a sense of humor — and detachment, and try to be as supportive as possible.

Yes, it’s difficult to watch friends struggle with the same issues I used to… And it’s somewhat sad to say “things won’t change” (and really not want to believe it). But I can also help them see the good things, and laugh (instead of cry) when things seem absurd. I can do this because I’m no longer emotionally or financially attached to the company.

… do you find you can see things more clearly from a distance?

Any tips for how to become more aware of your office culture and how it’s affecting you when you’re in the midst?
