Being Essential

Have I mentioned How I met your Mother? I suppose it’s easy to refer to that show when it’s a masterpiece, as far as the writing is concerned. I LOVE the dialogue, and yes the characters are endearing. I just (today) realized that Barney, the ficticious character played by Neil Patrick Harris, has a Barney blog site. Talk about taking “persona” branding to the next level!

As I am watching season 4 on netflix, once again I am getting good advice from an unstable character – Barney. In this episode (20 I believe), he was telling Marshall to find a reason to become essential at work during a period of lay-offs.  Marshall explains that he works extra hard but Barney convinces him that it doesn’t matter how hard you work, what matters is being essential at work.

There is food guy – he brings donuts or pulled pork. Then there is toy guy who has the best action figure props when talking about serious work conduct. Someone that Barney said to stay away from was back rub guy. And, sure enough, he starts rubbing Marshall’s shoulders and creeps him out.

I can reflect to my days at company Z and say that I suppose I was essential in some ways, but I should have watched this episode before working there!

What about you, are you essential at work?  Do you feel valued or fearful of losing your job?
