Holiday Returns

Today I resolved to do my least favorite post-holiday thing – run errands and return stuff.

Mostly my very own frivolous purchases during Black Friday when my family bought way too much crap at 7 am at Freddy’s. Socks, scarves, who knows what else and why.

But I also had another case of being given TOO much merchandise and needing to GIVE BACK what they had mistakenly given me. You know, the Gods are testing me to see if I would keep the stuff I didn’t pay for and I am superstitious enough to make damn sure I return anything that’s not mine. (See my earlier post)

The sales clerk remembered me at the store because I made two very big (size) purchases (well, and costly) for the girls. She had sent me to the loading dock to pick up one of the thingamajigs and they had to ship the second. When the young guy finally showed up at the warehouse door, he handed me the fabric piece for the contraption and I looked at him, waiting for the second piece.

Finally I said, “Isn’t there a large ring that this other piece attaches to?”  Oh, yeah. He forgot. He slumped over and sauntered back down the long hall and I stood for another 10 minutes until he came back with the large hoop. What we both hadn’t realized was that there was another fabric piece in the package, so he gave me two for the price of one.

Kate, the sales clerk, was a little surprised today that I showed up with the return when it was clear that I wasn’t actually making a transaction. I was returning their mistake. “Wow. That’s so nice. Thank you”, she said with a glint of surprise in her friendly eyes.

And for a moment, I wondered. How many people wouldn’t return something that was the retailer’s mistake? Would you?
