When in Doubt, Hit Delete

My neighbor is testimony to life after bad bosses. He recently left his sales job to work for a new technology company, and he was telling me a story that sounded so similar to many I’ve experienced at Company X.

Whereas now he can simply ask for time or state that he needs a few days with his family at his new employer, he couldn’t tell his old boss that he was not available 24/7. Any request for time resulted in a confrontation about how disloyal he (my neighbor) was to the company for needing time off. The message was ridden with doubt and guilt.

I was just mentioning to Jody, how I’d drafted an email to Blake about the myriad of appointments I have (legitimately) for exams (dental, medical, ortho) and wondered whether I should hit the send button. I was worried about the bad response and decided to delete it. Better off not pre-warning him for the same reason my neighbor made up stories about taking time off. It’s not that we want to lie, but we need to avoid the truth at all cost to avoid crazy behavior and punishing remarks. When in doubt, hit delete.

What about you, do you work for someone like this? Can you share your stories from your past or current experience?
